Richard G. Mungeam
Lead Sand Sculptor and Instructor
by Anne Bennett
In a former life Rick Mungeam was renowned residential architect traveling extensively designing custom resort homes showcased in several architectural publications. But the economic changes of 2008 resulted in Rick and his wife, Capri, selling their home in Colorado to begin traveling.
South Padre Island, Tx, late 2010, under the tutelage of Andy Hancock, Master Sand Sculptor, Rick learned the basics of sand sculpting. By mid 2011 Rick was honing his sand sculpting skills on The Emerald Coast of The Florida Panhandle, near Destin, along Scenic Hwy 30A, when his sandcastle with a romantic heart was used for a wedding, and later for several family portraits, Rick realized his talent might develop into a business.
Nov. 2011, Rick won the Pro-Am Division of The World Championship of Sand Sculpting to further exhort his talents. 2012 watched BeachSandSculptures.com became the reigning Sand Sculpting Champions and a visible and known presence along Florida’s Emerald Coast.
Their boys are grown now, but through home schooling their two sons Rick and Capri learned creative teaching skills that Rick now utilizes as he offers design services in the form of sand sculpting creations. From 30A and Santa Rosa Beach business advertisements in sand to corporate team building at WaterColor or Seaside, a private party on the Dune Allen Beach to corporate events at the ritzy Sandestin resorts, Alys Beach wedding proposal or a Rosemary Beach wedding sculptures, and inspirational sand castle on Grayton Beach or sculpting lessons at Topsail State Park, Beach Sand Sculptures can create a sculpture to meet your needs and exceed your wildest imagination.
Capri Mungeam
AKA Aqua Woman, Sand Sculpting Apprentice, Marketing
They say, “Behind every successful man their is a successful woman”, this is often said to emphasize that a man’s success often depends on the work and support of his wife. That may or may not be the case with The Mungeams, but one thing is for certain, they’ve been a successful business team for nearly 30 year now.
Initially sand sculpting was definitely Rick’s forte, Capri talk with the people on the beach, handed out business cards and promoted Rick’s Sandcastle Lessons. But over the last couple of years she has watched carefully and slowly absorbed many of the finer details of sand carving. She still feel like she has much to learn, but the alligator she sculpted on the Topsail Hill State Park Sand Sculpture caught the eye of many a “Gators” fans as one said, “that’s a good lookin’ gator”.
The design development is Rick’s department. “Rick is really the artist”, Capri is fond of saying, “but I come up with a lot of ideas and sometimes their pretty good”, she said with a smile. Typically when they begin a project Rick shovels and Capri hauls the water from the nearest water source – usually The Gulf of Mexico. They methodically work together to build their sculpture foundation and fill the forms. The couple has worked out their individual roles while they create a sand sculpture in order not to “step on each others toes” if you will.
The other major role that Capri takes is the “behind the sands” marketing. “I’m getting my marketing degree through Social Media. There is much to learn”, . With the ever changing advertising/marketing innovations and technology The Mungeams realize, that today, if you aren’t communicating with your the world via Social Media you are frankly “dead in the sand”. When BeachSandSculptures.com on Facebook received it’s 1000th “Like” in less than 6 months, Capri knew they were onto something very unique. They’ve even incorporated offering media and social media services to help clients to gain the maximum PR out of their Beach Sand Sculptures.

, have gained them two prominent sand sculpting wins, making them the 2012 Sand Sculpting Champions of the Emerald Coast and they bring their “WOW” to area events.

Santa Rosa Beach, FL. Sept. 26, 2012 – A majestically sculpted sand Eagle emerging from a pile of broken concrete with an American flag in his beak, entitled “Born Again”, wowed the beach-goers and the judges and was awarded 1st Place in the Open Division at Pensacola’s Fiesta of Five Flags Sand Sculpting Contest earlier this summer. More recently this creative couple brought awe and delight to the Panama City Beach Schooner’s Lobster Fest when they created a 12 foot Lobster holding a sign stating, “Eat Mor Chikin” in the well-know Chick-Fil-A font, that won them another 1st Place Trophy. From Pensacola to Panama City Beach, this last win marks them as the 2012 Sand Sculpting Champions of the Emerald Coast.

Panama City News 13 SandFish Sand Sculpture
After twice being rained out www.BeachSandSculptures.com TheSandman RickMungeam was finally able to create a sand sculpture for WMBB New 13 Morning Show. Hillary Hutchinson did a great job of interviewing Rick, asking all the important questions in the little bit of time given.
3:00am – always seems to come, well . . . early, and when you’ve been rained out of an event 2 times already it’s hard to be optimistic, especially when you have been hearing the rumblings of thunder for the past hour! Nearly ready to throw in the wet towel, TheSandman RickMungeam decides to give it one last chance and drives to Schooner’s Restaurant on Panama City Beach to create a quick sand sculpture and interview for WMBB News 13 Morning Show out of Panama City, Florida. Fortunately the weather was dry and the sculpting began.
The News 13 Morning Show airs from 5-7am. That gave Rick Mungeam only 2 hours to build and sculpt a sand sculpture – not a lot of time! So the piece had to be relatively small and obviously not very detailed, yet presentable for TV appeal. Hillary Hutchinson of WMBB was very forward thinking when she requested the June Fish she had view at www.BeachSandSculptures.com realizing that people love sandcastles but she wanted to demonstrate to her viewing audience something different.
Rick and his wife, Capri, after unloading their sand sculpting equipment and tools, began mounding and thoroughly wetting the sand. Using plastic forms they pounded up the sand to create the main body of the June Fish. At this point the fish had been dubbed “The News 13 SandFish”. Moving quickly TheSandman began forming the Sandfish while waiting ques from Hillary and camera man, Al, about the program timing and what they would be feeding live from the beach. Just as the sunlight made the sandy scene visible they went live for about 2 minutes, maybe a bit longer. Hillary was so excited the sand sculpting tools and the transformation that Rick was making in the sand.
As Rick continued to work the SandFish became more obvious, no longer just a pile of sand. With skilled technique Rick added the material for the tail then gathered some fine sand for his next step. During the second segment Rick demonstrated the technique of “wet stacking” to create the SandFish’s three dimensional bulging eyes. He also explained about basic tips that help the sand sculpture stand out from the base.
Unfortunately time did not allow for The WMBB logo to be etched into the side of the SandFish until the program was over, but on the last segment Hillary promoted www.BeachSandSculptures and telling her viewing audience that pictures would be posted on the WMBB Facebook Fan Page, then they cut the feed. Rick continued working to sculpt into the side of the SandFish, the WMBB logo. Pictures of the completed “News 13 SandFish” were taken. All in all a great experience and the team was very excited that Mother Nature cooperated this time!

BeachSandSculptures.com SandCastle FAQ #2 – How Much Water?
BeachSandSculptures.com SandCastle FAQ #2
How Much Water?
Through a series of specifically designed laboratory experiments, Amsterdam Physicist Daniel Bonn and his colleagues examined and tested the singular piece of scientific literature available on the physics of sandcastle building. This lone paper, probably through a lot of scientific jargon about capillary rise, stability and the likes, hypothetically concluded that the maximum height of a sandcastle or any other sand sculptures should be only 8 inches tall!
Perhaps from personal experience, Bonn and his friends of science may have known that sandcastles and most certainly sand sculptures created by professional sand carvers can stand many feet above 8 inches. By scientific experiments while building sandcastles, Bonn and his associates developed their own hypothesis (scientific guess) concluding the water content of a perfect sand castle to be only 1% by volume. But what does that mean to the average would-be sandcastle builder on the beach?
After teaching hundreds of people sandcastle lessons and sand sculpting workshops, TheSandman RickMungeam of www.BeachSandSculptures.com, a professional sand sculpting company based out of Santa Rosa Beach, Florida says about water content, “I don’t know about capillary action. I don’t know about percentages of water retained by the sand or even what percentage I use. What I do know is that sand itself varies greatly in its ability to retain water. We thoroughly saturate any sand we use for sand sculpting so it can retain as much water as possible, because it’s the water that hold the sand together. So the idea of just a dash of water is very misleading.” The beach is not a scientific laboratory and it becomes nearly impossible for the average person, let alone a child, to figure out 1% water to sand volume.

- Learn the perfect mix of water to sand – then you can create spectacular sandcastles yourself
“In our sandcastle lessons and sand sculpting workshops we demonstrate the perfect mixture of water to “your” sand. You will see it, feel it and experience the ratios for yourself when you lift the form to discover a nice solid piece of sand to sculpt. This way, the next time you go to the beach, you will have the sand sculpting skills to create impressive sandcastles and sculptures that will impress all your fellow beach goers. Scientific knowledge doesn’t seem to “hold up” against hands-on experience when it comes to sandcastles.

BeachSandSculptures.com SandCastle FAQ #1 – What keeps the sand together?
BeachSandSculptures.com SandCastle FAQ #1
What keeps the sand together?
Whether it’s a romantic wedding sand sculpture or marriage proposal, a clean business advertisement perfectly written in the sand yet looking like marble, or just a magical sand castle standing tall with parapets and turrets on the Santa Rosa Beaches of the 30A corridor, Rick “TheSandman” Mungeam inevitably is asked the same question;
What keeps the sand together?
He has answered this question many, many times and in many different ways, but the basic answer is always the same, “It’s just water”. One young man, age 7, decided that after about the 15th person he hear ask Rick this question, he decided that Rick’s basic answer of “just water” was not adequate, so he interjected, “It’s seagull spit”. We laughed at the comment. The young man realized, as we had not, that a lot of people aren’t happy with the idea that “it’s just water” added to the sand to hold the sculpture together.
In fact it’s not really the water, not really. Eric Sonstroem’s article on Indiana Public Media’s website, Moment of Science, explains that the real reason why sand sticks together when it’s wet is the result of a characteristic of water, called surface tension. When “just water” is added to the sand it forms something like a magnetic field between every grain of sand, holding the sand in place. When the sand dries out the sand sculptor’s time and talent, along with the sand, melds back into the beach.
Even though the science of sand castle building has now been explained in fairly simple terms you might still hear Rick “TheSandman” Mungeam telling people, “it’s seagull spit”. So just smile and nod and know, the special ingredient that holds the sand together; “it’s just water”.
